Landing that new job is definitely the goal, but not the end of the goal. Making that job a great place to flourish is the goal. Three tips to flourish at work.
- Find a Champion at Work
- Show Up – Don’t be a Murderer
- Surround Yourself with Smart People
Find a Champion at Work. With barely one-third of workers being “Engaged” at work new hires need to see how it is done right. Actively search for those champions or rock stars at work. These are the people who do quality work, who are respected and who you see make a difference. Be bold enough to affirm your respect for these people and ask if you can ask their advice from time to time. It doesn’t have to be an official mentor relationship. It’s about seeing the champions and building the relationship. The strongest commonality of “engaged” workers is they have a trusted relationship with a co-worker or supervisor. Increase your chances of being an “engaged” co-worker. Make it a goal to find a champion.
Show Up – Don’t be a Murderer. Be present and be prepared. Showing up means being there on time and ready to be a full participant learning and sharing when needed. Don’t be a murderer means don’t steal people’s time. The only thing we have in life is our time — our seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, years and decades. When you are late you literally are robbing people’s time — their life. You are saying your life is more important than mine. Be professional and show the greatest respect for others. Show up. Value their time.
Surround Yourself With Smart People. Commit to opportunities to feel uncomfortable or a little out-of-your-league. Surround yourself with smart people. Learning as much as possible about an organization and the people that make it work is important. Say “yes” to those opportunities whether formal or informal where you will be with others who work in different functions and teams. Aspire to be with people whose wit and wisdom challenges and inspires you. That edge of your comfort zone is a great place to push.
These three tips sound so simple, but they may be the real difference between just landing a job with opportunities or finding a place to flourish.
Flourish on!
