Margaret Jankowski definitely is a woman of character, courage and commitment! She founded The Sewing Machine Project, Inc. following the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia. A BBC article gave painful details about a woman who had lost her sewing machine in the storm, a machine she’d saved for years to buy, and, in losing it, she lost her means of earing an income. Jankowski saw a need and answered it.
The Sewing Machine Project works locally, nationally and internationally. “Community is important no matter where you live. The mission of the Sewing Machine Project is to give people a tool that will not only help them mend their own lives but also give them a way to take an active role in the rebuilding of their community. People grow strong and their community grows strong as well.”

Interesting tidbits.
- Since 2005 they have distributed over 1400 sewing machines, helping people become self-sustaining through sewing.
- Internationally reached Mexico, Sri Lanka, Kosovo, India, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Liberia
- Nationally reached Gulf Coast (after Hurricane Katrina), New Jersey (young women struggling with poverty), Montana rescue mission and many more.
A simple idea that has transformed lives and communities.
During this celebration of character, courage and commitment — I celebrate the authentic leadership of Margaret Jankowski.
Thank you! What a woman!
